New research has revealed that online marketing spending is set to rise around the globe this year.

The survey of over 1,000 worldwide companies by Econsultancy and ExactTarget shows that digital marketing budgets look set to increase by an average of 17 per cent over the next 12 months as firms shift funds from offline to online channels.

Seven in ten respondents said they aim to invest more in social media marketing, while 64 per cent are opting to focus on search engine optimisation and 56 per cent are looking to mobile advertising.

However, when it comes to return on investment, 54 per cent of firms said they believe pay-per-click (PPC) marketing is best for measurement - roughly tallying with the 51 per cent of respondents looking to up PPC spending this year.

"Social media marketing is the area where companies are most likely to be spending more money in 2010, but areas such as search engine marketing and email will remain buoyant," remarked Linus Gregoriadis, research director for Econsultancy.

The organisation's most recent Social Media and Online PR Report indicated that most UK firms plan to spend more or the same on social networking marketing this year compared with 2009.
