Russia is the top-ranking country when it comes to engagement with social networking websites, according to a new report.

The latest study from comScore reveals that Russian web users spent the most time on social networks in May, with consumers spending an average of 6.6 hours on such sites while viewing 1,307 pages each.

This is compared with a global average of 3.7 hours and 525 pages per visitor. Other countries in the top five include Brazil, Canada, Puerto Rico and Spain, with the UK ranking seventh and the US taking ninth place.

Mike Read, senior vice-president and managing director of comScore Europe, commented: "The highly engaged behaviour of social networkers in Russia offers significant opportunity for marketers and advertisers seeking to reach these audiences."

Previous research from comScore has shown that Facebook is the most used social network in most European countries, although this most recent study suggests that Vkontakte, a local website, is the most popular in Russia.
