Microsoft has announced that its Bing search engine now returns the latest posts from certain users on Twitter in its results when searchers look for specific names in relation to the microblogging site.

For example, searching for 'Kara Swisher Twitter' on Bing will return listings that display the writer's most recent tweets, as well as a link to her account on the social media site.

Initially, only several thousands of the most prolific and prominent Twitter users will be included in these new results based on tweet volume and followers, including both search experts and more general celebrities.

"We think this is an interesting first step toward using Twitter's public application programming interface to surface Tweets in people search," said Sean Suchter, general manager of Microsoft's search technology centre in Silicon Valley.

Twitter's own real-time search facility was launched in April this year and instantly indexes all tweets as they are posted on the social networking website.
