Facebook revamps social networking privacy controls

Facebook has announced that it is changing its privacy tools to give users of the social networking site more control over who sees their information and content.

In a blog post, Facebook chief privacy officer Chris Kelly said that the site is testing new controls that make it easier for users to choose to show their information to the entire web if they so wish, as well as giving them the power to decide exactly which people will see any information they might want to share.

This may see users making certain posts available to everyone while others are marked so they can only be seen by friends and family through the Publisher Privacy Control, which was launched in beta format last month.

Another facet of the new controls is simplicity, with Facebook looking to put all privacy settings on the same page rather than making users set controls for each new feature that is added to the social network.

"We'll also standardise the options we provide for each setting so the choices are always the same," Mr Kelly said.

Facebook also started to test a new real-time search feature last month.
